Sometimes also known as the meteor dragon, originates from Seneca mythology in the regions of the Canadian great lakes, Lake Ontario in particular. It is said that the great serpent was delivered to this world from a meteorite and with it came its ability to fly through dark stretches of sky towards the heavens on a fiery trail and shapeshift into other beings. For instance, in the tale "Ganyadjigowa", Gaasyendietha took the form of an old man to kill the story's hero (the mudhen).
The descriptions of the serpent echo the fright of the fishermen during sightings, with a length of 45 meters, the width of a barrel, huge eyes like fire, an enormous jaw, and giant fins on a body moving like a caterpillar.
For the sculpture itself, I chose to mix elements of a native lake ontario lake sturgeon, beadwork inspiration, meteorites, and an interpretation of a shifting humanoid/dragon-like form.
Why did you choose to sculpt this piece?
I grew up in Ontario and honestly never knew we had any folklore or mythology there. On top of that, two of my favourite things, space and dragons, kinda just met together for this one so how could I not?
How long have you been sculpting? What is your artistic background and style?
I’ve been sculpting for 9 years now, maybe a decade? Time is lost on me, but I have been drawing and painting since I was a kid. I have many interests ranging from cute and cartoony to grotesque. At the core of everything though I gravitate to strong form and movement. So, I suppose my style reflects that
How long did it take to create the piece? What tools / software did you use for your creation? Any insight on your process?
This one was very involved? A lot of starting over and trying it again. I’m not sure how long but I’m the last submission for this round so you can imagine haha. I used ZBrush for the sculpting and keyshot to render. I will be doing even more final shots in the days to come as well to bring my meteor snake to life.
Are you looking for work? If so, in what role & location?
I am available for freelance remote work! Contract, full-time, part-time.
I've got experience in concept and design as well as character art and 3d modelling.
