The Snallygaster, a dragon-like chimera of a beast is described as half reptile, half bird, and featuring octopus tentacles. It is said to have terrified the people of Frederick County, Maryland and the surrounding areas for centuries.
German immigrant farmers called the creature a Schneller Geist, meaning “quick spirit” in German. The beast would swiftly swoop down and snatch up farm animals and children. Hence where the name comes from!
Some stories claim it had a metallic-like beak with rows of sharp teeth and that it would feast on the blood of its prey/victims.
Why did you choose to sculpt this piece?
I love sculpting cryptids, and I've known about the Snallygaster and always wanted to sculpt it, so working on it for the Folklore Bestiary series felt like a perfect opportunity!
How long did it take to create the piece? What tools / software did you use for your creation? Any insight on your process?
About a weekend and a half. I used Zbrush for sculpting, and Marmoset Toolbag 4 to render the piece. I worked on some rough sketching in 2D ahead of the sculpt to get the ideas out, but overall the concept was refined mostly in Zbrush. As for rendering I took a decimated FBX file of the sculpt with polygroups and polypaint into Marmoset to render and Photoshop to fine tune the final render.
Is this piece for sale? How can a fan acquire it?
I'm working on getting some busts of this guy printed and will have it up on my Etsy so anyone can get their own physical bust!
Are you looking for work? If so, in what role & location?
